About Topsail Island

Arial view of Topsail Island - South looking northTopsail Island is a barrier island on the Southeastern coast of North Carolina. It is mid-way between the cities of Jacksonville (North) and Wilmington (South). Topsail is approximately 26 miles long and is home to 3 main communities Surf City, North Topsail Beach, and Topsail Beach. To locals, the island's name is pronounced Topsul.

Blackbeard the PirateTopsail Island has two main claims to fame. In the 1700's - before the island even had an official name - it is alleged that the notorious pirate Blackbeard (AKA: Edward Teach) made good use of the backwaters and channels surrounding the island as a hiding place. Here, he would hide his ships from merchant vessels travelling up and down the NC coast. When a ship was spotted the pirates would raise their sails and emerge from cover to plunder the cargo of unsuspecting ships. Merchant captains learned quickly to be on the lookout for the top sails of the pirate ships hidden behind the dunes. Hence, the island became known as Topsail Island.

Operation Bumblebee Observation TowerTopsail Island's other claim to fame is that it played an important part in the early development of the United States space program during the 1940's. Operation Bumblebee consisted of the US Navy's testing of a new propulsion system called the ramjet engine. Topsail Island served as the assembly and testing area for this new technology which lead to the development of the guided missile. Remenants of this era still dot Topsail Island. missiles and More Museum, Topsail Beach, NCVisitors often notice the several concrete observation towers scattered mostly on the southern portion of the island. The former "Assembly Building" where the rockets were built now serves as a community building and museum. Missiles and More Museum

Walking on the beach at Surf City, NCAfter the Navy released the island back to the public in the 1950's, Topsail Island quickly developed into the vacation meca it is today. Topsail residents and business owners are proud of the fact that Topsail Island is well-known as a family-oriented vacation spot without the normal commercial development often found in other beach communities. Today, Topsail Island still maintains that sleepy, southern beach atmosphere while avoiding mega-commercialization. Most of the restaurants, shops, and other businesses are locally owned and operated.

Loggerheads!
Topsail Island is also one of the nesting areas for the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle. Every spring, up to 200 female Loggerheads come to the shores of Topsail to lay their eggs in the dunes. The small turtles hatch about 100 days later. Each nest can have upwards of 100 eggs.

During the hatching season, residents and visitors alike gather around a nest that is known to be ready to erupt with tiny loggerheads. When they hatch, the baby loggerheads rush to the water and out to sea inmass. Out of 100 hatchlings that make it to the water, only 1 lucky one on average will survive to adulthood.

Releasing loggerhead sea turtles back to the wild is a common event on Topsail Island, NC.Many loggerheads become sick or injured during their lifetime and would perish if not for a group of dedicated individuals who make it their life's mission to rescue and care for them. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is North Carolina's only facility dedicated to the care & release of sick and injured sea turtles. The facility is staffed by volunteers and operates on donated funds. It is indeed a sight to witness the release of a former patient back to the ocean after successfully recovering under the care of these dedicated individuals.
