Local Topsail Island Weather Online Polls
Recent Poll Shows Most Topsail Island Area Residents Would Evacuate for Category Three Hurricane
A recent local online poll indicates that the vast majority of Topsail Island area residents would evacuate if a hurricane up to and including a Category 3 threatened the greater Topsail Island region.
Category 3 hurricanes produce winds of at least 111 mph and a storm surge of 9 to 12 feet. Cat-3 hurricanes are considered a major hurricane by the National Hurricane Center.
They have the potential to destroy mobile homes and small structures, knock over large trees, and can potentially cause catastrophic coastal flooding. Hurricane Fran was a Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall in the Cape Fear region in September 1996
Of those who participated, 19 percent said they would evacuate for a Category 1 storm while 32 percent would evacuate if the hurricane reached Category 3 status.
Only 1 percent of those who participated in the poll said they would remain at home for a Cat-5 hurricane.
A troubling number of people said they would not leave their home under any circumstances. The poll showed that 8 percent said they would never leave their homes no matter how strong an approaching hurricane may be.

Poll Shows Topsail Residents Have Little Faith in Government Help After a Disaster
A recent TopsailWeather.com online poll shows that Topsail Island area residents and property owners have little faith that they will receive any help from government if a disaster should strike the region.
When asked if they thought they could rely on federal, state, or local government sources for disaster assistance after a major disaster, nearly 71 percent of participants said that no government help would be forthcoming and that we would be on our own.
"After seeing how FEMA failed miserably after Katrina, how can we be expected to get any better help from them", said one Topsail area resident in his poll comments.
Only 9 percent of participants said we could rely on our local county government to provide help after a disaster while 7 percent though they could rely on the state. Only 3 percent had any faith in FEMA and the federal government for help after a disaster.
The poll shows that a vast majority of folks living in and around the greater Topsail Island area think the various government programs from the Federal level on down are not prepared to offer much assistance in times of disaster. Most feel that they cannot rely on our government, including state and local officials, for help or other assistance.

Poll: Majority Believe Humans Are Not The Only Cause of Climate Change
2007-10-28 | A recent unscientific poll conducted by Topsail Weather shows that most people do not believe that human beings are the primary cause of climate change.
The poll, conducted over a 2-week period, indicated that a full 65 percent of those who participated do not believe people are the chief cause of climate change.
"The Earth is a dynamic place and continually evolves despite what human beings do", said one participant. "Humans must adapt to climate changes in order to survive."
Climate change, particularly global warming, is a hot topic in the media and many of those who left comments with their poll answers felt the media is pushing an agenda.
"The media is only showing us one side of the story," said another participant. "Scientists who do not go along with mainstream thinking are not being heard."
Twenty-eight percent of those who took the poll said that humans ARE the primary cause of global change. A BBC poll conducted last month showed that the majority of people around the world believed that human activity, such as industry and transportation, is a significant cause of climate change.
"As human beings we're capable of changing our environment. We need to be mindful that what we pour into the atmosphere can eventually cause bad things to happen."
Eight percent of those who took the poll do not believe climate change is occurring at all.
